
And the number 1 in the top 10 castles / fortresses in Romania is occupied by the Citadel of Sighisoara, Sighisoara.
Sighisoara is a medieval fortress with Gothic architectural ensembles areas, but also in Renaissance and Baroque style. The latter are the result of a constructive effort occurred relatively late in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
In the old defensive system, arranged since the XIV century, can still be admired today, 9 towers, 2 bastions and part of the precinct wall. The towers were located in the most vulnerable of the city and were provided with shooting galleries and artillery bastions. Of these, the Clock Tower (64 m height) is the most impressive.
Religious architecture in the Middle Ages was as important as military. Of the 9 churches functional during XIV-XVIII centuries are still preserved to this day 3, namely the Monastery Church, Church Hill Church called the ‘lepers’. Here you can admire the rare pieces of religious sculpture and painting, but funeral.
In terms of civil architecture, it is impressive that most of the 164 houses of the city, with at least 300 years old, are considered historical monuments. Here you can admire the river rock bots semi-cylindrical specific fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the stone frames of the windows profile imitating Venetian Gothic and inside ceilings and rooms painted entirely. Among these buildings, the most important are the Vlad Dracul, the Venetian House and the House with Stag.
A very original building, the largest of its kind in Transylvania, is scale schoolboys, which enables access to the Church on the Hill High School and especially winter weather.
Despite construction of the nineteenth century, which changed partly medieval architecture, Sighisoara Citadel remains the most beautiful and best preserved complex of medieval architecture in central and SE Europe.
