
The 7th in top 10 castles / fortresses in Romania is occupied by the Citadel of Brasov, Brasov.
Its construction began in 1395 at the instigation of King Sigismund of Luxembourg. In the fifteenth century there was already the first ring of fortresses. The beginning of the sixteenth century became one of the strongest fortresses in Transylvania.
Brasov Citadel had four gates: three earliest and one that dates from the eighteenth century. Today you can see only some of Catherine’s Gate, south-east of the Black Church, where there is the chapel “St. Catherine. Gate is covered with a sharp turn, provided the four corners with towers, sign of the right of jurisdiction which it had its citadel on the people domain.
Construction bastions outside the city walls, began in the fifteenth century. Brasov Citadel was 28-32 lookout towers. Besides the belt of fortifications were built another 4 towers and hill Tampa other seven towers can be seen today only in a state of ruin.
