Fortress (known under the title inappropriate Neamt Fortress), is a medieval fortress in Moldova, located near the city of Targu Neamt.
Raised during Petru I of Moldavia, the city known most flourishing period during Stefan cel Mare, which includes a defensive system of fortresses that were defending the role of Moldova.
Foundation in 1359 the State of Moldova, increasing central power and economic development were determining factors for building stone fortification, which ensure control of roads and crossing points or mandatory, the core of defense in case of war. The country’s defense system designed by Petru I Musat at least three fortresses (Neamt, Suceava and Schei), but its craftsmen have built many monasteries and churches with fortified enclosures.
One of the most famous moments of glory Neamt Fortress in 1691 when it withstood attack by the Polish army led by John Sobieski. Battle of Romania and Poland was described in the novel ‘Sobieski and Romans’ written by Costache Negruzzi and was screened in 1914 by Leon Popescu, directed by Emil Garleanu.
It was later abandoned due to pressure from the Ottomans.
